Internet Explorer Security Bug: How to Protect Yourself

Gizmeon : Internet Explorer Security Bug: How to Protect Yourself.
Microsoft over the weekend admitted to a huge vulnerability in Internet Explorer that allow hackers to set up malicious websites in order to gain complete access to visitors' PC, provided they visited the page with a IE (version 6 and up). From there, hackers could install apps, break into other accounts and generally use the computer as their own.
In order to protect yourself from the flaw — dubbed "Operation Clandestine Fox" by security firm FireEye — the best thing you can do is stop using Internet Explorer until Microsoft patches it. Other browsers, such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, don't have the problem, and you can export your bookmarks and other settings to those browsers very easily.
If you don't want to stop using IE, there are ways to ensure you're not exposed while browsing the web. Ever since IE10, the browser has offered an Enhanced Protected Mode (EPM). You won't be vulnerable to the bug with EPM enabled, according to FireEye, and it's listed as one of the workarounds Microsoft recommends on its explainer page.
Disabling IE's Flash plug-in will stop the bug cold, FireEye says — although that will also render your browser powerless to play Flash videos and games.
There are other, more technical ways around the exploit as well. You can install a piece of software called the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) and configure it for Internet Explorer, Microsoft recommends. That will let you browse without altering your web experience much. Be sure to use EMET 4.1 since it's automatically configured to protect IE.
Separate from Protected Mode, IE has other layers of security, including sliding settings for security zones, which will block malicious software from hijacking your PC if they're set to high. It will, however, make using some websites (such as order forms) more difficult.
Microsoft is expected to release a patch for the flaw soon — either in the company's next "Patch Tuesday" update, due May 13, or in an off-schedule patch specifically for this issue. It's unclear if Windows XP will get the patch; support for the OS officially ended in April, but some large enterprise customers are continuing to get software updates.

New Vulnerability Found in Every Single Version of Internet Explorer

www.gizmeon.com :  New Vulnerability Found in Every Single Version of Internet Explorer
According to a confirMation by Microsoft late last night, a new zero day vulnerability has been found to affect every version of Internet Explorer. In other words—over a quarter of the entire browser market.
Attacks taking advantage of the vulnerability are largely targeting IE versions 9, 10, and 11 in something called a "use after free" attack. Essentially, the attack corrupts data as soon as memory has been released, most likely after users have been lured to phony websites. Microsoft explains:
The vulnerability exists in the way that Internet Explorer accesses an object in memory that has been deleted or has not been properly allocated. The vulnerability may corrupt memory in a way that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user within Internet Explorer. An attacker could host a specially crafted website that is designed to exploit this vulnerability through Internet Explorer and then convince a user to view the website.
Microsoft is currently investigating the issue and will likely release an out-of-cycle security patch to take care of the problem. Let's just hope it comes soon, because according to security firm Fire Eye, this means that about 26 percent of the entire browser market is at risk.
And since Windows XP users won't be getting the patch for this fairly threatening bug, anyone still running the now-unsupported software is going to have to cough up some big bucks to stay safe. Anyone like—oh, the IRS, for instance. [Microsoft via Cnet].

Satya Nadella Outlines His Vision For Microsoft

GizmeonSatya Nadella Outlines His Vision For Microsoft
Microsoft's new CEO Satya Nadella participated in his very first earnings call with analysts Thursday as chief executive. The software maker reported strong Q3 2014 financials, buoyed by strong growth in its cloud services division.
Although Nadella was happy to talk about the most recent results, investors and analysts were even more eager to hear more about his plans for Microsoft's future.
The new CEO reiterated that his focus is for Microsoft to become a "mobile first" and "cloud first" company, but he offered more details on what those phrases actually mean. "When we say mobile first, we really mean mobility first," Nadella explained. "It's about offering users a great experience across devices, some ours, some not ours, that we we can power uniquely."
For the cloud, Nadella is committed to the ongoing mission of one cloud for everyone and for every device. That mantra is remarkably simple to Microsoft's original mission statement: "A personal computer on every desk and in every home, running Microsoft software."
When it comes to Windows, Nadella said the new mobile-first and cloud-first focal points mean thinking about Windows differently. "We're starting to think of it as one family, which wasn't true before," Nadella said.
In other words, his vision is for Microsoft is for it to become less reliant on vertical integration — and more able to work alongside other systems.
When it comes to planning and executing for the future, Nadella said it was important to do both on a continuous basis — and not to plan and execute on episodic bursts. "You can only succeed if you plan all the time and are able to change the plan as it needs to be changed," he said.
The same is true for execution. On that front, Nadella pointed to the recent product launches and announcements, including Office for iPad.
Finally, Nadella discussed his role in reviewing the current business. "As a leadership team, I feel we have picked up the pace of asking the hard questions so that we can realistically evaluate our business," he said.
Ultimately, Nadella said, he wants to be accountable to investors, his team and Microsoft's customers — because "at the end of the day, that's what matters."

Smartphones could soon be printed on t-shirts

www.gizmeon.com: Smartphones could soon be printed on t-shirts
Researchers are investigating a new version of “spaser” – a nano-scale laser or nano-laser technology which could mean that mobile phones become so small, efficient, and flexible that they could be printed on clothing. A team of researchers from Monash University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering (ECSE) has modelled the world’s first spaser (surface pleonasm amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) to be made completely of carbon.
A spaser emits a beam of light through the vibration of free electrons, rather than the space-consuming electromagnetic wave emission process of a traditional laser. PhD student and lead researcher Chanaka Rupasinghe said the modeled spaser design using carbon would offer many advantages. Chanaka said other spasers designed till date are made of gold or silver nano particles and are semiconductor quantum dots while our device would be comprised of a graphene resonator and a carbon nano tube gain element.
He said the use of carbon means our spaser would be more robust and flexible, would operate at high temperatures, and be Eco-friendly. Chanaka said because of these properties, there is a possibility that in the future an extremely thin mobile phone could be printed on clothing. The paper has been published in ACS Nano.

WhatsApp crosses 500 million monthly active users in less than 5 years of its inception

www.gizmeon.com : WhatsApp crosses 500 million monthly active users in less than 5 years of its inception
WhatsApp today announced it has crossed 500 million monthly active users. It took the mobile messaging service less than fiveyears to achieve the milestone since Jan Koum and Brian Acton founded the service in June 2009. WhatsApp says Brazil, India, Russia and Mexico are its fastest growing markets. Users are sending more than 700 million photos and 100 million videos over WhatsApp every single day.
WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook earlier this year for a whopping $19 billion. Earlier this month, WhatsApp announced it was processing 64 billion messages every day. WhatsApp is also planning to introduce voice calling feature that will enable users to make free voice calls over the Internet without having to create an account. Like messaging on WhatsApp, users will be able to make calls to other WhatsApp users if they have their number.
Here’s a brief timeline of WhatsApp’s growth:
June 2009 – WhatsApp is incepted by two of former Yahoo employees, Brian Acton and Jan Koum, to provide an alternative of SMS services to users. The messenger app allows users to send unlimited messages over Internet connection without needing the regular top up credits. Most importantly, the service is launched at a nominal one-time payment of $0.99.
April 2011 – WhatsApp grows as a popular data-based messaging service and receives $8 million in funding from investors, which helps the company grow further.
October 2011 – WhatsApp continues to grow stronger, and the number of messages sent through the app touch a billion messages per day mark. Despite popular services like iMessage on Apple devices and BlackBerry Messenger, WhatsApp continues to grow.
August 2012 – It was not even a year since WhatsApp had achieved the one billion messages per day mark, and WhatsApp records 10 billion messages being sent per day, ringing danger bells for other companies.
December 2012 – Rumors emerge about Facebook being in talks with the messaging platform for a possible acquisition.
January 2013 – WhatsApp announces it processed 18 billion messages on New Year’s Eve, which reflects its popularity among its users. The number also shows that the platform has become a perfect substitute for SMS.
April 2013 – Once again rumors of WhatsApp’s acquisition related talks emerge, however this time it is Google that is rumored to have made a $1 billion offer for buying out the service.
June 2013 – Even with the arrival of new apps in the market to give competition to WhatsApp, the service continues to grow. It breaks its own record and processes a whopping 27 billion messages per day.
June 2013 – For the first time, WhatsApp reveals it has crossed 250 million monthly active users, which makes it bigger than Twitter.
October 2013 – WhatsApp’s user base crosses 350 million monthly active users mark, which includes over 20 million users in India.
December and January 2013 – WhatsApp user base grows by another 50 million to reach 400 million monthly active users. Creates a new record by processing 54 billion messages sent over a day on New Year’s Eve.
February 2014: Social networking giant Facebook finally acquires WhatsApp over a year after reports about the possible acquisition talks surfaced on the web. The deal is worth a staggering $19 billion, which involves $4 billion in cash, about $12 billion in Facebook stock, and $3 billion in restricted shares.

Apple, Google, Microsoft Embrace the Fight Against Smartphone Theft

www.gizmeon.com : Some of the biggest companies in the mobile industry have signed a pledge to include new anti-theft technology in phones starting July 2015.
The Wireless Association (CTIA) announced the signing of the "Anti-Theft Voluntary Commitment" on Tuesday. Among the signees are Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, Nokia, HTC, Huawei, Motorola, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular.
The signees agree that new models of smartphones, manufactured after July 2015 and sold in the U.S. will have a pre-loaded or downloadable anti-theft tool.
The tool will enable the user to remotely wipe data from the phone and render it inoperable in case the phone is stolen or lost. Furthermore, the tool will prevent reactivation without user's permission (including factory reset attempts), but it will allow the authorized user to reverse the inoperability and restore data in case the phone is recovered.
The initiative comes after several states started considering laws that would make an anti-theft kill switch mandatory for smartphones. In February 2014, California State Sen. Mark Lenoproposed a bill that would require manufacturers to install such software on their phones. Later that month, a group of four senators introduced a similar bill called the "Smartphone Theft Prevention Act."

Google Camera app launched for Android, brings refocussing abilities

www.gizmeon.com : Google Camera app launched for Android, brings refocussing abilities
Here are some key features of Google’s Camera app.
Photo Sphere and Panorama:
It enables users to click Photo Sphere, a 360º view of the surrounding. These photo spheres consist of various photos stitched together, resulting in files as large as 50-megapixels. Google Camera can also photograph high resolution panorama shots too.
Lens Blur:
There’s the Lens Blur mode which gives photos a shallow depth of field look, which not just helps the subject stand out, it also makes photographs look more professional.
Refocus:
Also, it offers the ability to change focus after clicking the picture, a functionality that is a trend these days, especially with Nokia and Samsung having the feature embedded in their respective camera apps. In terms of the quality, the app doesn’t close to Nokia’s Refocus app.
To use the feature, as you press the shutter the button, you need to smoothly move the phone in an upward motion while keeping the subject in the centre. After that, it quickly processes the photo and makes it ready for setting/switching focus.
Auto-hiding Interface:
And to top it all, the camera interface hides on its own, leaving the viewfinder and a large shutter button on the screen.
As image sensors are squarish and 16:9 aspect ratio is overly rectangle, it means all the pixels on the sensors aren’t used. But the viewfinder on Google Camera gives a proper a 100 percent view (4:3 aspect ratio), which means that no pixels are lost.

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Apple iPhone 5S

Gizmeon : Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Apple iPhone 5S: 10 ways the Galaxy S5 is better than the iPhone 5S
More in-camera control:
Yes, the iPhone is one of the most widely used camera phones out there, and the iPhone 5S isn’t an exception either. The 8-megapixel camera on the iPhone 5S is good for photography, especially with the consistently good results that it offers. The problem is that there’s a very limited user control over photography, something the Galaxy S5 offers to a larger extent. You can make changes to the exposure, white balance, and ISO.
The Galaxy S5 also offer a number of preset modes that help users get more from the camera. There’s the Shot & More mode, under which various scenes can be chose like Best Photo, Best Face, and Panning. The interface on the Galaxy S5 is simple and not as plain (and devoid of options ) as the iPhone 5S. Virtual Tour is a new inbuilt mode, which lets the user walk around and take photos, which are then rolled into a video by the camera using various effects.
You can change the metering mode for tricky lighting conditions, and can also use the timer too in the Galaxy S5. Also, the Galaxy S5′s camera is better specced and comes with what Samsung claims to be the fastest Autofocussing system on camera phone. Selective focussing (after clicking the picture) can be done on the Galaxy S5, while the iPhone offers no such features.
Ability to shoot 4K video:
While most of our laptops, desktop screens and television sets run at full HD (1920×1080 pixels) resolution, the phone have now started to offer 4K video as standard. The Galaxy S5 is one of the forerunners in the field, while the iPhone 5S offers full HD at max. Having said that, the Samsung still doesn’t offer 120fps slow motion video as the iPhone 5S, although you can shoot 60fps full HD video.
Heartbeat Monitor:
One of Samsung Galaxy S5′s new addition over the Galaxy S4 is the heartbeat monitor. The added feature enables to keep a track of the users heartbeat with the use of a dedicated sensor. The same can be achieved on other smartphones with third-party apps but Samsung integrates it with its S Health app.
Expand the memory:
The iPhone 5S, sadly, comes with a fixed-inbuilt storage only, which means memory expansion is limited to cloud storage only. The Galaxy S5 can cope up with cloud storage too, but comes with a microSD card slot as well, which means up to 128GB of memory could be available to the user, on top of the 16GB inbuilt storage.
Swap the battery:
The iPhone 5S looks great and its unibody design is among the best that adorns any smartphone. But the same form factor takes away the ability to switch batteries in the phone. You can always carry a portable charger but that adds to the weight. The Galaxy S5 stays away from this handicap. You can take the battery out and replace it with a charged one, in case of an emergency. Keeping it simple isn’t that bad after all.
Power Saving Mode:
Talking further about battery life, the Galaxy S5 offers an ultra power saving mode, which, according to Samsung, limits the phone to restricted usage, but ends up saving a lot of battery, A fully charged battery can run for about a week, and a 10 percent charge be good for a day, albeit with a black and white display, and limited apps.
Kids Mode:
Parental guidance isn’t applicable to movies alone. Phones stay with us 24×7, and while privacy is one concern, keeping it out of the hands of kids is a bigger and more daunting task. You cannot just let them look at your messages, pictures, or Snapchats, can you? Unlike the iPhone, the Galaxy S5 comes with a Kids Mode. The mode makes the phone kid-friendly, and your dark secrets remain out of their reach.
Apps that talk to each other:
The issue with third-party apps on iOS is that there very little, almost negligible, inter-communication between them. Android, on the other hand, is more linked, hence offering the user an easier experience. For example, in the iPhone, if you click a picture using the native camera app and want to share it on Instagram, you will have to go to the Instagram app and open the photo in that and upload it from there. In case of Android, you have the option of sharing the photo directly from the gallery. It will in turn open the Instagram app for you, saving yourself from the trouble of switchings apps.
Water proof:
You don’t your iPhone out in the rain, do you? It might actually be the worst nightmare to have water splashed on your device. Thankfully, that isn’t the case when we talk about the Galaxy S5. It is certified to be water-resistant for 30 minutes at a depth of up to three feet.
USB on the go:
In case the added availability of storage space is still not enough for you, there’s the ability of Android phones to read USB drives, a feature known as USB On The Go. For the iPhone, you can set up a Wi-Fi based hard disk, which is a more cumbersome and expensive option.

How Technology Will Protect Buildings From Earthquakes In Future?

www.gizmeon.com :  Seismic Shield Technology Will Protect Buildings From Earthquakes In Future
An earthquake of magnitude 8.2 hit the Chile coast last week and brought about landslides and a significant tsunami. A week before that, many earthquakes of smaller magnitude had hit the Southern California. The immense earthquake that struck Japan in March, 2011 did not just cause a nuclear plant meltdown but the satellites were also knocked out of their orbits.
This great earthquake and its damage has resulted in an increasing realization that it is important to be ready for huge earthquakes in spite of their unpredictability. In order to defend the important infrastructure in areas liable to such earthquakes, the French scientists are working to build something similar to a sound shield which can redirect the energy of earthquake somewhere else.
Some scientists are working on forecasting earthquakes; even then they have been able to predict earthquakes only minutes before the disaster. The French scientists are looking to lessen the destruction caused by such earthquakes, particularly to the buildings that are not used to such intense shaking, for example power plants. These scientists doubted if the sound waves also behave like cloaking techniques that bend some wavelengths of light around a target to make them invisible. The plan is to build a series of minor holes around the city susceptible to earthquakes that vibrate at the same frequencies as the earthquakes and hence, counterbalances the vibrations and saves the area inside the holes. The scientist arranged a demonstration with the help of sound waves in soil that worked; the energy from their computer-generated earthquake was refracted by the sound waves from a particular target area.

India made the most content censorship requests: Facebook transparency report

www.gizmeon.com : India made the most content censorship requests: Facebook transparency report
India has registered most content censorship requests on Facebook, according to the social network’s second transparency report on government requests between July and December 2013. The findings of the reports highlight that while US reported most requests for user accounts, India stood second on the list in terms of requests made to get access to user accounts.
The report suggests that the Indian government made a total of 3,598 requests for user data, and 4,711 requests for user accounts references. Out of the total, Facebook produced data for 53.66 percent of requests. The noticeable part of the finding however is that India registered 4,765 requests for content restriction, which were reported primarily by law enforcement officials as well as India’s Computer Emergency Response Team under the local laws for religion or state.
In terms of other countries’ data, like earlier this time as well the US made maximum 12,598 user data requests and asked for more than 18,715 user accounts information. UK stood third, with a total of 1,906 requests for user data and 2,277 requests for user accounts references. Out of all, Facebook gave out data for 81.02 percent of requests made by the US, and 71.30 percent of the requests by UK.

Malware attack rate on Android smartphones higher than earlier

www.gizmeon.com : Malware attack rate on Android smartphones higher than earlier.
Imagine if smartphones are infected to the same extent as personal computers. The resulting damage would be much more severe. In a first, Finnish researchers have measured smartphone malware infection rates and explored ways to identify infection with previously unknown malware. The team investigating the true extent of malware infection in Android devices has discovered that infection rates in Android devices at around 0.25 percent are significantly higher than the previous independent estimate.
The project collected data from over 50,000 devices during a seven-month period.
The researchers also speculated that smartphones infected with malicious apps may have other, benign apps in common, possibly because the users purchase them all from the same app market.
The researchers investigated if it is possible to develop a technique to identify devices infected with previously unknown malware.
“In our dataset, this approach is up to five times more likely to identify infected devices than by choosing devices at random,” said Hien Truong from University of Helsinki.
Earlier estimates about malware infection rates vary greatly ranging from more than 4 percent of Android devices to less than 0.0009 percent of smartphones in the US.
University of Helsinki researchers are working on the the ‘Malware Insights’ project at the Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Secure Computing (ICRI-SC) and would present their paper at this year’s World Wide Web conference.

iPhone 6 – the new smartphone to be released by Apple

www.gizmeon.com : iPhone 6: Rumors and Speculations
The market is ablaze with the rumors and speculations about the next generation of Apple’s smartphone ; Iphone 6. It seems it will be presented in September, 2014. Apple will introduce new phones in two versions, one with a 4.7 inch screen and the other with a 5.5 inch screen.
The screen of the phones will probably be made of sapphire crystal, a material resistant to scratches and is almost as durable as a diamond. It will be seamlessly blended with thin aluminum body. The devices will definitely be lighter and thinner than the previous but improved with a large screen with high resolutions and it will be resistant to scratches.
Also, as per our information goes, special focus is being devoted to new camera technology with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). The Smartphone will have higher specifications of FaceTime camera. The main camera will be significantly improved with resolution of 10 megapixels. iPhone 6 cameras will have refocused capable light field camera. This technology works by capturing light fields, rather than rendering 2D capture. The result is likely to be stunning with a photo which is no longer limited to a fixed frame capturing, but here, you can select a part of the photo to completely refocus the image.
And despite phone having a larger screen , the phone will become lighter than even a 4 – inch iPhone 5S. Last but not the least, the new iPhone will be driven by new iOS 8.0 platform.

While the Ace Style sports the familiar Galaxy styling, the handset's features suggest that it's aimed at more budget-conscious consumers. Saying that the Ace Style is "designed to support and power young social consumers," Samsung's new handset features a 4-inch WVGA display and a 1.2GHz dual-core processor.
The Ace Style also sports a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, a front-facing VGA camera and 4GB of internal memory. The handset will also come with TouchWiz Essence, Samsung's custom interface that runs on top of Android.
The Ace Style will go on sale globally in Cream White and Dark Grey beginning in April. Pricing wasn't revealed, but reports suggest that the handset will cost between $275 and $315.

Apple iWatch rumored

www.gizmeon.com : Apple iWatch rumored for third quarter
Will the much-rumored Apple iWatch finally debut later this year? Yes, at least according to one of the latest rumors.
Apple will reportedly unveil its long-awaited smartwatch in the third quarter of 2014, according to Taiwan's Economic Daily News. Based on an alleged bill of materials, supply chain sources told the news site that Apple is aiming to produce 65 million iWatches by year's end.
The watch itself will be manufactured by Quanta Computer, say the sources. Richtek Technology will make the chips, while TPK will create the watch's sapphire touch panels. Further, Apple is developing the watch's processor but will farm out chip production to Samsung, the sources added.
Samsung and other tech players have unveiled their own smartwatches, so Apple is already fashionably late to this party. But Apple could shake up the smartwatch market with a device that outshines rival products. Beyond pairing with your iPhone, an Apple iWatch reportedly would serve as a health and fitness tracker by tapping into an iOS 8 app called Healthbook.
This latest in a long line of iWatch rumors should certainly be taken with a grain of salt. Reports of an Apple smartwatch have been surfacing for quite a while now. But other recent reports have pegged a 2014 launch for the iWatch.
CNET contacted Apple for comment and will update the story with any further details.
Apple shares were up nearly $3 to about $526.40 in pre-market trading on Tuesday.

Microsoft to restore Start menu to Windows

Microsoft to restore Start menu to Windows. Microsoft this week gave customers a bare-bones peek at the future of Windows, saying that the next iteration after Windows 8.1 Update will restore a Start menu and let users run "Metro" apps on the classic desktop.
The sneak peek was part of the opening day keynote of Build, Microsoft's developer conference, which ran April 2-4 in San Francisco.
"I'm not here to announce the next version of Windows," Terry Myerson, the head of Microsoft's operating systems engineering group, said at Build. "But I am going to share that we are going all in with this desktop experience to make sure your applications can be accessed and loved by people that love the Windows desktop."
Myerson showed off two features of the unnamed update to Windows 8.1: A Start menu and windowed "Modern," née "Metro," apps on the desktop.
Both had been rumored to be coming to a future version of Windows; those claims first surfaced in December 2013.
As developers saw on the big screen behind Myerson, the new Start menu will be a blend of the traditional tool familiar to Windows 7 users and dynamic tiles that evoke the Windows 8.1 Start screen. The windowed Metro apps will be just that: resizable, draggable traditional windows on the desktop that will feature a title bar and the X-marks-the-spot close button to shut down the app.
"We will be making this available to all Windows 8.1 users as an update," Myerson said. He did not offer up a date or even a broad release target, or say what the update would be named.

How to save tons of money on printer ink

www.gizmeon.com : Studying ways to reduce paper and ink use for his school, a 14-year old teenager figured out that by switching from Times New Roman and other fonts to Garamond, organizations and businesses could save a ton of money on printer ink each year, CNN reports.
After collecting random handout samples from teachers and counting how often the most common characters were used in different typefaces, 14-year-old Suvir Mirchandani measured how much ink is used for each letter. “Next he enlarged the letters, printed them and cut them out on cardstock paper to weigh them to verify his findings. He did three trials for each letter, graphing the ink usage for each font,” the publication writes.
Following his research, he concluded that his school district could reduce ink consumption by 24 percent and save $21,000 each year.
Suvir published his findings in Journal for Emerging Investigators (JEI,) a publication founded by Harvard grad students in 2011 that offers means for middle school and high school students to showcase their work.
“We were so impressed. We really could really see the real-world application in Suvir’s paper,” Sarah Fankhauser, one of JEI’s founders said. JEI then challenged Suvir to apply his project to the federal government. After repeating his tests, the teenager found that switching to Garamond for all printing, the federal government could save almost 30 percent or nearly $136 million each year. On top of that, an additional $234 million could be saved if state governments also switched fonts.
However, the government doesn’t seem that eager to change typefaces, even though it found Suvir’s work “remarkable.” Instead, the Government Printing Office will focus on printing fewer documents each year and using recycled paper.

Facebook Improves Free Voice Calls in Messenger App

www.Gizmeon.com : Facebook updated its Messenger app Thursday with improvements to the app's voice calling feature.
The latest version of the app makes it easier for users to make calls by changing the location of the call button so it appears next to a contact's name within conversations. (Previously, the call button was behind a menu.)
Facebook Messenger's voice calling feature is similar to other standalone messaging apps such as Viber and WeChat. Users can make phone calls to friends for free, provided they have at least a wifi connection.
Facebook first added voice calling to its Messenger app in January 2013. Last week, the company added preset groups and message forwarding to the app.
The update comes weeks after photos that showed voice calling on WhatsApp— a feature rumored to be in the works for some time— leaked online.
Facebook Messenger is available to iOS Android andWindows Phone users.
An earlier version of this article stated that voice calling was a new feature added in the most recent Facebook Messenger update. Voice calling was already part of Facebook Messenger and the most recent update improved the functionality and changed the location of the call button. We regret the error.

App that lets you chat without data connection!

www.gizmeon.com: Move over WhatsApp. Here comes a revolutionary chatting app that has taken the mobile messaging to another level. With this, you are able to send and receive messages even when you do not have an actual internet or Wi-Fi data connection.
Yes, you read it right.
This iOS-enabled app uses Apple’s Multipeer Connectivity framework — essentially a peer-to-peer feature that lets you share messages with other app users nearby.
“FireChat allows the device to connect directly to others nearby using Bluetooth, peer-to-peer Wi-Fi or traditional Wi-Fi networks so you do not actually need a data connection,” Micha Benoliel, CEO of Open Garden firm that developed the App was quoted as saying.
The Apple’s Multipeer Connectivity APIs can be used for everything from collaborative editing and file sharing, to multiplayer gaming and sensor aggregation, said a report.

Chrome inches past Firefox in desktop browser battle

www.gizmeon.com : Google’s browser outpaced its Mozilla rival last month by fraction of a percentage point, according to Web tracker Net Applications.
Google Chrome has snuck past Firefox to take second place among desktop browsers, at least as seen in the latest Web traffic stats from Net Applications.
In March, Chrome took home a 17.5 percent slice of all desktop brower traffic, bumping Firefox to third place with a 17.2 percent cut of the action. That effort marked a first for Chrome, which has consistently ranked behind Firefox in Net Applications' monthly reports.
Chrome has been rising up the ranks to challenge Firefox, though not without some bumps in the road. A year ago, Firefox's share of desktop browser traffic was more than 20 percent, while Chrome's was 16.5 percent. Chrome fell further behind during the second half of 2013. But by February, Firefox's cut had dropped to 17.6 percent, while Chrome's had inched up to 16.8 percent.
Microsoft's Internet Explorer ended March with a 58 percent share of desktop browser traffic, down slightly from February but up from 55 percent a year ago.
Among specific browser versions, IE 8 held the top spot last month with a 21 percent share, followed by IE 11 with 15.7 percent and Google Chrome 33 with 12.6 percent.
